New Delhi, May 7, 2025 – The Indian government has launched a nationwide Cashless Treatment for Road Accidents scheme. Road accident victims can now get free treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh at designated hospitals, as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Cashless Treatment for Road Accidents Now Active Nationwide
The scheme, effective from May 5, 2025, ensures that any person injured in a road accident involving a motor vehicle is eligible for cashless treatment. Especially, during the golden hour—the critical first hour after the incident crucial to save life’s. This move aims to save lives by ensuring victims receive immediate medical help without financial delays.
Road Accident- Cashless Treatment: ₹1.5 Lakh Coverage for All Victims
Under the Road Accident-Free Treatment initiative, treatment will be provided for up to ₹1.5 lakh per person for a period of up to seven days. Designated hospitals across India will offer this facility without requiring any advance payment. In emergencies, non-designated hospitals provide initial stabilization care according to official guidelines.
Road Accident Fund Government Support and Coordination
The National Health Authority (NHA) shall lead the implementation of the scheme. Especially, by closely working with local police, state health departments, and hospitals. Each state and Union Territory will have its own State Road Safety Council as the nodal agency. Further, these agencies will be responsible for coordinating treatment, payments, and onboarding hospitals to the scheme’s online portal.
To ensure proper execution, a central steering committee will also be formed to oversee the scheme and ensure smooth operations.
Government Meets Supreme Court Deadline with Life-Saving Reform
This scheme comes just days before a Supreme Court deadline mandating urgent steps to improve trauma care for road accident victims. A pilot version of this scheme was launched in March 2024 and has now been expanded nationwide, promising faster and fairer medical response.
The Cashless Treatment for Road Accidents scheme marks a crucial step in improving road safety and public health. It not only supports accident victims financially but also ensures access to quality emergency care across the country.
