The Thar Roxx is here and it might prove to be a nightmare for the SUVs in the market. While it seems a strong product, it fights in a segment with one of the most cutthroat competitions in the Indian market. Two interesting, yet completely different models among these are the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. While they get multiple trims, we will be comparing the top Diesel trim of the Thar with the similarly priced variants of the other two SUVs.
Features Comparison
Starting with the Thar Roxx, the 10.25-inch infotainment screen that supports Android Auto and a digital instrument of the same size takes centre stage. Other features include ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, steering buttons for audio, rear AC vents, USB-C charging ports, a height-adjustable driver seat, and a Harman Kardon-branded 6-speaker setup. Similar to the one we saw on the Thar, Creta has a dual-screen digital setup that is used for infotainment and driving info. The only difference is that they look connected at first glance.
The Creta is not short on features compared to the Thar on any front, while it uses a Bose speaker instead of Harman Kardon. To the list, it adds features like ambient lighting, a magnetic panel, an electrically powered driver’s seat, an air purifier, and an electronic parking brake.
The Compass has slightly smaller displays, a 10.1-inch infotainment panel and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. It misses out on features like ventilated seats, a wireless phone charger, and a branded audio system.
Powertrain Talk compared with the Thar Roxx
Under the hood of the Thar Roxx, you have two choices: a diesel and a petrol. The petrol is a 2.0-litre turbocharged mill that produces 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The Diesel is a 2.2-litre powerhouse that produces 130 hp and 300 Nm. You can pair both of them with a manual or automatic, both with 6 speeds. One thing to note is that diesel engines get both 4WD and RWD, while petrol versions only have an RWD system.
The Creta offers you a choice of either a petrol or a diesel powertrain. There are two petrol engines on offer. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated generates 115 hp and 144 Nm. While the petrol powertrain is a turbo version churns out 160 hp and 253 Nm. The diesel powertrain is a 1.5-litre mill with 113 hp and 250 Nm.
The Jeep Compass also comes with petrol and diesel engines. The petrol is a 1.4-litre powertrain that produces 163 hp and 250 Nm, while the 2.0-litre Diesel churns out 170 hp and 350 Nm. These engines typically have a 6-speed manual gearbox. The automatic transmission with the petrol is a 7-speed Dual Clutch unit. While the Diesel sticks with a 9-speed torque converter.
Off-Roading
When talking about the Thar Roxx, you ought to mention off-roading. It has amazing off-road potential, thanks to its optional 4×4 system, which allows a low-range transfer case. It has the best ground clearance of 226 mm, approach angle of 41.8 degrees and departure angle of 36.8 degrees, and a 650 mm wading capacity.
The Creta is not the car you would want to be in if you are off the road. With its FWD system and 190 mm ground, it barely stands in front of the Creta and Compass.
The Compass, in the price-comparable model, also gets only FWD. Other details of the Compass are better than the Creta but not as high as the Thar Roxx. It stands in between the other SUVs with a 205 mm ground clearance, approach angle of 30 degrees, departure angle of 34 degrees, and 483 mm water wading depth.
Price Comparison with The Thar Roxx
The price of the Thar Roxx’s top model AX7L variant is not out yet. Up to the AX5L Diesel, the prices are available, which will set you back ₹ 18.99 Lakhs. This is the 2WD automatic version, and the 4WD version’s price is also to be announced ahead.
The Hyundai Creta has a wide price range depending on the powertrain and features offered. It starts with the E 1.5 petrol engine at ₹11.00 Lakh. The top of the line is SX (O) with the 1.5 Turbo and DCT that will cost ₹20.15 Lakh.
The Compass’s base model is the Sport variant, which currently has a 2 Lakh discount and costs ₹18.99 Lakh. This is the only variant that comes close to the prices of the other two SUVs. If you want to go all out with your Compass, then you can get the top model for ₹32.41 Lakh.
