Tata Motors' TPEM Starts Production At Its New Facility In Gujarat

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, India’s renowned automobile giant. Further, proudly announces the initiation of passenger vehicle production at its cutting-edge factory in Sanand, Gujarat. This milestone event was marked by the unveiling of the inaugural Tata-branded car from the facility. Further, attended by TPEM Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, and leaders from the Passenger and Electric Vehicles businesses.

Strategic Growth and Future Plans

Tata Motors Passenger & Electric Vehicles‘ impressive growth over recent years. Moreover, Shailesh Chandra, emphasized plans to sustain momentum. Especially, with a robust pipeline of future-ready “New Forever” products and proactive investments in electric vehicles. With existing capacities nearing saturation, the new facility will unlock an additional state-of-the-art manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, scalable to 420,000 units per annum.

TPEM – Strategic Location and Facility Overview

Located in the industrial hub, GIDC Sanand, with access to a robust supplier network. Further, the facility was acquired from Ford India on January 10, 2023. Spanning 460 acres, it represents Tata Motors’ second plant in Gujarat. Especially, for manufacturing Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicle (EV) models. The plant comprises four main shops—Stamping, Body Construction, Paint, and Final Assembly. Especially, with high levels of automation and the latest technology ensuring precision manufacturing.

World-Class Technologies Implemented

The facility has implemented several world-class technologies, setting new benchmarks within the industry. Key retooling and tech upgrades include new dies for stamping critical skin panels in the Press Shop, modification of all lines with additional robots, grippers, and fixtures in the Weld Shop, handling system modifications, external robot programming, and internal robotic painting and waxing setup in the Paint Shop, and handling system and end-of-line system modifications in the Assembly Shop.

Employment Opportunities and Workforce Development

Presently, the plant employs over 1000 staff and technicians, with plans to create an additional 1000 jobs in the next 3 to 4 months in alignment with production ramp-up plans. Tata Motors has invested in upskilling its workforce by providing Diplomas, Bachelor of Engineering, and Master’s Degrees, as applicable.

Commitment to Sustainability

Committed to sustainability, the plant has a 50 KW solar rooftop and aims to become water positive by December 2024.
