Last Tuesday 76 all-new interceptor cars were handed over to the Regional Transport Authority (RTO) flying squad in the presence of dignitaries from the Government of Maharashtra & RTO officials. Along with Shri Uddhav Thackeray – Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Cabinet Minister- Shri Satej Patil green flagged the interceptors. With an objective to create caution & awareness resulting in lesser fatalities rather than getting hold of more offenders.
Maharashtra did not record any major dip in the fatalities which were quite similar to 2019. Even with the pandemic restrictions the number remained high. Stated Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra – Shri. Uddhav Thackeray.
In 2020, Maharashtra recorded 24,971 road fatalities out of which 11,569 lost their lives despite the pandemic restriction on movement. Across state there have been several rash & negligence driving been witnessed. Over speeding and causing danger to other lives has resulted in more causalities.
The authorities have furnished the flying squad in India with the latest gadgets to minimize mishaps and ensure higher road safety. These interceptors carry Tint Meters, Speed Guns, and Breath Analyzers.
The high end modern speed guns can accurately record the speed limit of the vehicle from a distance. Abhay Deshpandey (Deputy Commissioner Enforcement) stated that officers will check the transparency of the window panes and windscreen with a tint meter, penalize offenders, and impound the vehicle.
The government acquired the interceptors at a price of INR. 13.7cr. Delivering 76 interceptors as the first slot the government shall acquire 16 more interceptors shortly.
As the automobile segment is about to cross the 4 crore benchmark, road safety becomes equally important.
